Celebrating Debutantes 2013: Kelley Lynn (Interview + Giveaway)

Despite her busy schedule, debut author Kelley Lynn drops by The Escapist today for an interview and giveaway of her novel, Fraction of Stone!

Kelley Lynn

1. What do you feel about the number '13'?

To be honest, not much. My favorite number is 21, followed by 5 (sports numbers). It's my debut author year though! So that's pretty cool.

2. What's the best thing that happened after your book was published?

Getting feedback from readers. As long as its constructive, it can be good or bad feedback. I just really enjoy hearing what people have to say about my work, and how it made them feel. That's one of the major reasons I want to write.

3. How did you celebrate the publishing of your book?

I had a launch party. There's some cool pictures on my website: www.kelleylynn.com. My sister helped to throw it and it was a lot of fun. We had a really great turnout!

4. Do you read reviews of your book?

Yes, and I always will. I need to know what people think. Sure, negative reviews aren't the best to read, but I learn things through them. And as long as their constructive, I take it as a growing experience.

5. What is your best or most unforgettable moment with a fan?

Hmm, there's a few, but I think one of the coolest was after my younger cousins read it and were surprised I could write like that. Then they were asking me to speak to their classes. It's neat that I can be an example that hard work and dedication pays off.

6. Was there any book/s from other debut author of 2013 that you loved?

Wow, too many to name but a few that were fantastic were Cassie Mae (she's had a few this year), Theresa Paolo's (NEVER) AGAIN, Lizzy Charles EFFORTLESS WITH YOU, Rachel Schieffelbein's SECONDARY CHARACTERS, and so many more.

7. Are you interested in writing in a different genre or for a different audience?

Yes. FRACTION OF STONE is YA Fantasy. I've written a number of manuscripts, all YA, but of different genres. We actually sold a collab which is a YA Contemporary to Bloomsbury, slated to come out early 2014 and I'm close to signing a contract on a YA Science Fiction. It's been a very busy year!

8. Share us one embarrassing moment you've had.

Just one? I tend to do embarrassing things hourly, so this is hard. But I've been on a trend lately where I try to check into a hotel where I don't have a reservation. I travel for my nine to five job, so I'm in hotels a lot. For whatever reason, I've been going to the wrong hotels, thinking they're the right hotels, then when they go to look up my reservation I find that I don't have one. I have to get back in my car and drive to the correct hotel. I'm sure the hotel employees wonder how one can do that...multiple times. Haha

(Sidenote: I'm with you on "tend to embarrassing things hourly".)

9. Favorites are tough for me...I don't really have them. But I'll try to answer these questions.

Favorite color? I like sunset colors, so reds, yellows, oranges.
Favorite movie? I definitely cannot name one. I like action, adventure, romance
Favorite ice cream flavor? Anything with nuts in it. And chocolate.
Favorite song? Can't do this either...I really do like almost everything.
Ultimate celebrity crush (dead or alive)? Haha. Well, I really like Aaron Rodgers (quarterback for the Green Bay Packers), and Jordy Nelson (Wide Receiver for GB), there's plenty more, but that's a good start.

10. What's next for you?

Next for me. As I mentioned above, my collab author, Jenny S. Morris and I, sold ROAD TO SOMEWHERE to Bloomsbury Spark. So we'll have edits and promotion to work on. I'm finishing up a YA Thriller and another collaboration project, a YA Fairytale Retelling. I'll be writing FRACTION OF STONE 2 as my NaNo project. Busy, busy, busy :)

(Sidenote: Wow. Good luck!)

More about Kelley!

Eventually the day came when the voices in Kelley Lynn’s head were more insistent then her engineering professor’s. So instead of turning to her Thermodynamics book, Kelley brought up a blank page on her computer screen and wrote. Somewhere along the way she became a Young Adult author.

Kelley was born and raised a Midwestern girl. She’s not afraid to sweat and fills her free time with softball, soccer and volleyball. (Though you probably don’t want her on your volleyball team.) She occasionally makes guest appearances as a female vocalist for area bands. Music plays a large role in her writing process as well as the characters and plot lines within her stories.

You can find Kelley hanging out at her blog, titled in her name, as well as the group blog she shares with her fellow critique partners, Falling for Fiction. Kelley is a member of the Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators.

Fraction of Stone
(Fraction #1)
by Kelley Lynn

Published March 21st 2013 by Sapphire Star Publishing

Blurb (Goodreads):
Wind tunnels, torrential rains and earthquakes tear apart Casden. The cause of the world’s imbalance is unknown, but the mounting occurrences suggest there’s little time before life ceases to exist.

Rydan Gale and Akara Nazreth are the only humans with the ability to wield magic. The tattoo on their necks and the discovery of an ancient book, dictate they are the key to the world’s survival.

But the greatest obstacle for saving mankind isn’t the bizarre creatures, extreme betrayals and magic-fearing men hunting them.

It’s that Akara doesn’t believe the world is worth saving.
