Hello there!

How's your Christmas been?

I had fun!!! Well, I do every time. :D
And of course, there are tons of gifts! I also enjoyed looking at my 2-year old sister's face when she opened my gift for her. It was priceless. She always know how to appreciate things. And she loves pink! :D

Anyway, what I got for you today are super Cool things (of course).

  • 2012
2012's end is near, and I've got a lot to be thankful for because of it's Coolness.
Apart from the never-ending blessing for me and my family, I am very thankful that this year, I've done things I never thought I'd be doing. I feel like I've been in a roller coaster ride. Amazing people that I met and became real close to my heart.

This year, I also started my blog. This one.
I had my first blog event, followers, readers, friends and received books from authors and publishers on my 7 months of blogging.

I read a lot of books(!!!)--I've surpassed my goal of 100 books (which is originally 50 books) in Goodreads challenge!--and met my new faves.

On 2013, I have plans for my blog, like changing the layout and the title. New features and more. And hopefully, I'd get to receive more books! :D

I'm really looking forward for 2013. God knows why I'm so excited. I feel like it'll rock 10x as my 2012 did. Annnd, I'll be also on my fourth year of nursing! Yay!!

So..

Enjoy your holiday.

HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR!

GOD BLESS YOU ALL. :)

Celebrating Debutantes: Author Ingrid Paulson (Interview + Giveaway)

My last featured debut author was the one who wrote about valkyrie .. and well, she said she 'visits' her books at the bookstore every day

Author Ingrid Paulson

"So, “readers” are the best thing has happened since the book came out.  I really worried that no one would read it so every time someone tells me they have, I’m over the moon!"
- INGRID PAULSON, debut author of 2012

How was the feeling of being a published author, at last?

It’s amazing.  I still “visit” my book at the bookstore often—there’s a bookstore on my walk home so that’s not quite as pathetic as it sounds.  But I still get a crazy thrill every time I see it on the shelf.

What is/are the best thing/s that happened after your book was published?

I’ve had so much fun doing signings and getting to know book bloggers—you guys are awesome and I’ve had a blast doing interviews and writing posts.  So, “readers” are the best thing has happened since the book came out.  I really worried that no one would read it so every time someone tells me they have, I’m over the moon!

(Sidenote: :D)

What do you think you're up to now if you're not writing?

I’ve been trying to spend more time with my family.  I kind of disappeared for a little while during revisions and again when the book launched.  My three year old knows the names of all my characters, which is a sign I maybe need to dial it down a few notches.

Did you plan, all along, to write/publish a book with the genre of what you got right now?

You know, I tried writing a ‘grown up’ book well before I discovered YA and I couldn’t bring myself to finish it.  I just wasn’t into the characters.  Then I sort of fell into reading YA without realizing what I was doing.  And suddenly I started writing and finished a first draft of a YA novel in about 2 months while working full time.  I was obsessed.

Are you interested in writing with different genre or audience?

I’m very interested in picture books right now.  And I can definitely see writing middle grade.

Do you read reviews about your book?

I did at first, but at some point I decided to stop and asked my husband to skim them every once and while.  I do sometimes look on amazon or goodreads.  It’s hard, because reviews can be very helpful (and I don’t just mean the positive ones) or can throw you off your game by shaking your confidence.

Who is the character on your book who has the most response from your readers?

It seems like people like Tucker a lot, which makes me happy because he was really fun to write.

Which stresses you more: writing/finishing your book, looking for a publisher/getting your book published, or seeing negative feedback from the readers?

All of the above!

Did you read your book (like, from first page to last)? If you did, what did you felt?

I can’t read my book all the way through.  I sometimes read scenes I really like but every time I try to read it cover to cover I get really nervous—like debilitating-stage-fright levels of anxiety.  I don’t know why that is.  I just start to imagine someone else reading it and wonder what that reader thinks about every sentence.

What's your next project?

I’m working on a ghost story about a boy who comes back to avenge his own murder.  And I’m writing a story set in the Galapagos about a bunch of kids on a summer science adventure and end up in the middle conspiracy to destroy the ecosystem.  The second one has a narrator who reminds me a little of Tucker from Valkyrie Rising.

Share us one embarrassing moment you've had.

Oh, there are so many.  I’m incredibly distractable, so I do things like walk into walls and glass doors.

(Sidenote: Well, you are not alone.)

When's your birthday?

August 21.

Do you read/believe in horoscopes?

Yes. I love horoscopes. And I’m a Leo!  I don’t believe horoscopes can actually predict the future, but sometimes they help you analyze your day in a new way as you fit events into the predictions.  But I’ve definitely had some eerily prescient horoscopes that give me pause.

Fave movie?

I actually have a terrible attention span for movies and tend to wander off or crack open my computer and work.  It drives my husband crazy.  But I do often love movie adaptations of books.  And I think I’ve watched the BBC Pride and Prejudice a zillion times.

How did you celebrate the publishing of your book? :)

I had a launch party at a local bookstore.  All of my friends came and both of my parents flew out.  It was super fun.  The day after the book came out was my daughter’s birthday, so we had a cupcake feast two days in a row!

Valkyrie Rising
by Ingrid Paulson
(Valkyrie #1)

Published: October 9th 2012 by HarperTeen

Summary (Goodreads):

Nothing ever happens in Norway. But at least Ellie knows what to expect when she visits her grandmother: a tranquil fishing village and long, slow summer days. And maybe she’ll finally get out from under the shadow of her way-too-perfect big brother, Graham, while she’s there.

What Ellie doesn’t anticipate is Graham’s infuriating best friend, Tuck, tagging along for the trip. Nor did she imagine boys going missing amid rumors of impossible kidnappings. Least of all does she expect something powerful and ancient to awaken in her and that strange whispers would urge Ellie to claim her place among mythological warriors. Instead of peace and quiet, there’s suddenly a lot for a girl from L.A. to handle on a summer sojourn in Norway! And when Graham vanishes, it’s up to Ellie—and the ever-sarcastic, if undeniably alluring Tuck—to uncover the truth about all the disappearances and thwart the nefarious plan behind them.

Deadly legends, hidden identities, and tentative romance swirl together in one girl’s unexpectedly-epic coming of age.

Celebrating Debutantes: Author Elizabeth Norris (Interview + Giveaway)

We're down to the second to the last debut author!

Today, let's welcome the author who wrote a sci-fi novel, next project is a contemporary mystery and has plans into writing a fantasy, middle grade and adult book!

Author Elizabeth Norris

"Someone was quoting Unraveling and me, and I just feel really awed. I couldn't stop smiling that whole day."

- ELIZABETH NORRIS, debut author of 2012

How was the feeling of being a published author, at last?

It's a strange feeling. There's so much waiting and then so much whirlwind craziness when it comes to publishing a book. When Unraveling first came out I was so excited but also so nervous. I hadn't even let my family or friends read the book, and I was really afraid they wouldn't like it. I think my best moment and the moment when it really sunk in that I was a published author(!) was when I was on tumblr and I saw a post with a cool quote...that seemed really familiar. And then I realized it was familiar because I wrote it! Someone was quoting Unraveling and me, and I just feel really awed. I couldn't stop smiling that whole day.

What is/are the best thing/s that happened after your book was published?

The MTV news was really cool. I can only imagine how awesome it would feel to see my book on screen as a TV show. But I think the best thing that happened after publication is much more personal. My long distance relationship became not long distance, and I gained more confidence in my writing.

Are you interested in writing with different genre or audience?

Some day I'd love to write a middle grade book or an adult book. I have ideas, it's just a matter of having the time. I also have a fantasy idea that is my baby. It's that book that I've been working on and thinking about since I was 18. Who knows if it will ever get published or if it would fit better as YA or adult, but it's definitely a labor of love in the back of my mind.

Do you read reviews about your book?

Not really. If bloggers tweet or email them to me I read them, but I don't seek them out. I'm really glad I've written something that makes people feel things, but reviews are for people who want to decide whether they're going to read the book. Not really for me.

What is your (best/fun/unforgettable) moment with a fan?

I was in San Diego at Mysterious Galaxy for a signing and two fans brought me a carne asada burrito from Roberto's--which is what Ben gets for Janelle (it's her favorite) in the book. Also at that same signing, a fan gave me a letter inviting me to Hogwarts (I'd totally be Ravenclaw) and it was awesome.

Who is the character on your book who has the most response from your readers?

Janelle and Ben. People either really like or really don't like Janelle. (I think that's a strong personality thing). Then a lot of people really love Ben, which is great. I love him too.

Was there any book/s from other debut author of 2012 that you loved?

There were so many--Two highlights of my reading from debut authors though were Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood and Brain on Fire by Susannah Calahan (an insanely good adult memoir).

Did you read your book (like, from first page to last)? If you did, what did you felt?

I read it from first page to last in several stages, but when it was actually the final book, I didn't. I was in the middle of editing the sequel when it came out and I was trying to get everything to fit together right and I didn't want to somehow mess that up. I'm actually about to do my first pass pages (the almost final step) of Unbreakable and I'm going to sit down and read it out loud from first page to last because that will help me catch any errors.

Tell us about your next project.

So obviously, there's Unbreakable, which is the sequel to Unraveling. That comes out April 23rd. Then the project I'm finishing up right now is my novella, which is three stories from Ben's POV which will actually come out before Unbreakable on March 15th. Then my next project is a contemporary mystery that I'm really excited about. It takes place in a seasonal beach town that's famous for things like homemade fudge, boardwalk carnivals, saltwater taffy, and the high profile abduction of a six year old girl. The book opens eleven years later when she comes back--alive.

Share us one embarrassing moment you've had.

This is pretty embarrassing (and not the smartest thing I've done), but I was a competitive swimmer, and when I was a junior in high school I was at a meet in upstate NY and swam the first event Friday night and then was hanging around with a bunch of friends for the right of the meet. We ended up playing a card game where the winner had to dare the loser to do things. When I lost, I was dared to moon the pool deck from this small room upstairs (it had a window that looked down on deck). I thought no one would see me because no one would really be looking up there. But right before I did it, my friend pounded on the glass and everyone on deck looked up--and everyone in the stands (all the parents) looked over and saw me. I had a write an apology letter which my coach taped up to a bulletin board on the main entrance for the next two days of the meet.

Fave joke?

One of my best friends from high school always used to tell this joke about a guy who bought a hundred bricks to build a wall, but it only takes 99 so he throws the last one up in the air. It's not funny at all, but she would just laugh hysterically while she told it which made it really funny. Then of course she'd tell another joke which ended with a brick crashing through a window. (Still not funny unless she was telling it)

What's the recent thing that made you cry?

I'm terrible. I cry all the time. Last night I watched Scandal and got all teary during a flashback between Olivia and Fitz.

When's your birthday?

March

Do you read/believe in horoscopes?

I read them. I only believe them when they're good.

Fave movie?

There are so many, but one of my all time favorites is Donnie Darko

Fave artist/song?

I love anything by Adele and Florence + The Machine, but right now I'm really into Lights by Ellie Goulding. It's sort of the theme song for something I'm working on.

How did you celebrate the publishing of your book? :)

I invited a bunch of friends to join me at Flute, a champagne bar in NYC and we hung out and had drinks.

The debut

Unraveling
by Elizabeth Norris
(Unraveling #1)

Published: Published April 24th 2012 by Balzer + Bray

Summary (Goodreads):

Two days before the start of her junior year, seventeen-year-old Janelle Tenner is hit by a pickup truck and killed--as in blinding light, scenes of her life flashing before her, and then nothing. Except the next thing she knows, she's opening her eyes to find Ben Michaels, a loner from her high school whom Janelle has never talked to, leaning over her. And even though it isn't possible, she knows--with every fiber of her being--that Ben has somehow brought her back to life.

But her revival, and Ben's possible role in it, is only the first of the puzzles that Janelle must solve. While snooping in her FBI agent father's files for clues about her accident, she uncovers a clock that seems to be counting down to something--but to what? And when someone close to Janelle is killed, she can no longer deny what's right in front of her: Everything that's happened--the accident, the murder, the countdown clock, Ben's sudden appearance in her life--points to the end of life as she knows it. And as the clock ticks down, she realizes that if she wants to put a stop to the end of the world, she's going to need to uncover Ben's secrets--and keep from falling in love with him in the process.

From debut author Elizabeth Norris comes this shattering novel of one girl's fight to save herself, her world, and the boy she never saw coming.

Book Review: Bewitching by Alex Flinn

Bewitching by Alex Flinn, paperback edition book cover
Bewitching
Alex Flinn

Series: Kendra Chronicles #2
Genre: YA, fantasy
Editions available: Hardcover, paperback,
Kindle, ebook, international
Published: February 14th 2012 by HarperTeen
Source: Borrowed
Rating:

Summary (Goodreads):

Bewitching can be a beast. . . .

Once, I put a curse on a beastly and arrogant high school boy. That one turned out all right. Others didn't.

I go to a new school now--one where no one knows that I should have graduated long ago. I'm not still here because I'm stupid; I just don't age.

You see, I'm immortal. And I pretty much know everything after hundreds of years--except for when to take my powers and butt out.

I want to help, but things just go awry in ways I could never predict. Like when I tried to free some children from a gingerbread house and ended up being hanged. After I came back from the dead (immortal, remember?), I tried to play matchmaker for a French prince and ended up banished from France forever. And that little mermaid I found in the Titanic lifeboat? I don't even want to think about it.

Now a girl named Emma needs me. I probably shouldn't get involved, but her gorgeous stepsister is conniving to the core. I think I have just the thing to fix that girl--and it isn't an enchanted pumpkin. Although you never know what will happen when I start . . . bewitching.

Photobucket

My Thoughts:

Remember Kendra, the witch who cursed Kyle, the beast on Beastly? Welcome her back.
Bewitching is Kendra's story of becoming and being a witch. It doesn't just contain Kendra's tale but also the people who she tried to help--as the basis whether she should help Emma, the current girl who needs her fairy godmother--er, witch.

The moment I started reading the book, I honestly cannot put it down. It's too painful to do so. It's like Kendra put a spell on the book and she won't let you put it down until you learn her story.

Bewitching is a combination of Little Mermaid, Gingerbread Man, a fairytale whose title-I-didn't-know-so-I'm-sorry and Cinderella. The book started how Kendra found out that she is a witch then alternate of her past and present lives.

I liked the fact that even though this book's got lot of stories told/involved, the point of view remained on whoever the leading character is, and even if it is changed perspective per perspective, it isn't annoying or weird or confusing. I was actually surprised how come I've been around the world through different times with different people in just one book. (When I look on the outside, I would always insist: This should be thicker! It has lots of stories! No way it could be this thin.)

I am really pissed at Emma's gorgeous evil step sister. SHE'S REALLY ANNOYING I COULD RIP ALL OF HER HAIR AT ONCE! Ugh. Buut. I super LOVE the ending. So magical. So amazing. So swoon-worthy. So heart-melting. EVERYTHING!

I also liked that each story told in this book, there's lesson you could learn. How to be brave, how to accept and love and be patient to your step sister even though she is evil--but standing up for yourself anyway, be contented on what you have and not to be choosy, and a lot more. But the lesson that I really liked the most was the one at the ending. You'll know when you read the book. ;)

Overall, I LOOOOVED how the whole book was amazingly written. How the stories connect even if they don't really connect, how fresh ideas pop in each and every page. It's like I'm eating my fave food over and over again and never get tired of it because there are surprises in every bite. I mean. This. Book. Is. Really. AWESOME.

Reading Bewitching was an AMAZING experience. It was a really nice ride. The one that I couldn't ever (like, ever) forget. I'm actually thinking of asking for a witch rather than a fairy godmother. What do you think? ;)

This isn't my first Alex Flinn book, but it is so far my best-est read from her. She's now my fairytale re-teller goddess!

Recommendation:
I would recommend this to all fairytale geeks like me--which I know there are LOTS out there. You don't have to read Beastly to enjoy this because it's not continuation of Kyle's (the beast) story and Kendra's got little spotlight there, but if you wish to read it first, then off you go. Just don't forget to read this SOON.

For everybody!!!! :D

Similar books: My Fair Godmother series by Janette Rallison

Book cover comment/s:
I would like to see Kendra smirking, smiling or something looking like she's got a secret to tell you rather than to have this expressionless face. It's not Kendra at all.

Alternate covers:

< --- This cover, I believe, was the first alternate cover. I saw this on Goodreads before but now, it is nowhere to be seen. I'm so glad I saved it because I really loved it. But if you'd ask me, I'll choose the cover above. Because this looks like a cover who's doing fashion show on a Book Covers Show. The one above looked more like witch-y after all.

German edition.
It's got different name (Magical) and there's Cinderella's famous glass slippers!

* Haven't read Bewitching? You can by winning this book!
Tomorrow, December 27th, I will posting my list of Best Books Read for the Best of 2012 giveaway hop in which I added Bewitching on my list! Good luck in advance. ;)
