Celebrating Debutantes: Author Wendy Higgins (Interview + Giveaway)

Author Wendy Higgins

"Thank you so much for hosting me, Michelle, and thank you to everyone who's read Sweet Evil and supported me in this wild journey! For those of you who haven't read it, if you like dark, sensual romances, I hope you'll give it a try!"

- WENDY HIGGINS, debut author of 2012

How was the feeling of being a published author, at last?

When I was contacted by my editor at HarperCollins it was a very emotional time for me. I was in shock and disbelief that my life long dream of being an author was coming true. To me, book authors were stars, and it was beyond overwhelming. I'm still in disbelief when things happen, and I still cry happy tears about the job I've been blessed with.

What is/are the best thing/s that happened after your book was published?

Talking to readers and other authors, and making friends with readers and other authors is the highlight of my career. I recently had my first foreign sale to Czech Republic, and was honored as one of the Goodreads Choice YA Fantasy top 15 - both of those were amazing moments!

What do you think you're up to now if you're not writing?

I adore reading, always have, so when I have any spare time I devour books (YA and adult romance, mostly).

Did you plan, all along, to write/publish a book with the genre of what you got right now?

No, I always wrote contemporary stories, and a lot of chic-lit until I got this idea. The fantasy elements are still hard for me, even as I write book three. A lot of the fantasy stuff gets added in the 2nd draft (like mentioning peoples' auras and stuff.)

Are you interested in writing with different genre or audience?

I am open to anything!  If the inspiration hits, I'm all over it.

Do you read reviews about your book?

No. Absolutely not. In the beginning I did, and a few broke my heart, so I don't read any anymore, and life is much more enjoyable that way!

Who is the character on your book who has the most response from your readers?

By far, Kaidan Rowe. Most of my readers sigh for Kai.  :)

Was there any book/s from other debut author of 2012 that you loved?

Unraveling by Liz Norris was a fun Sci-fi YA

Author you dream to work with?

I want to tour with Jennifer Armentrout. She's a good friend and I know we'd have a blast!

What's your next project?

Sweet Peril, the sequel to Sweet Evil, comes out April 30th, 2013 and I'm editing that one right now. It's fun because we get to see Anna grow up a little and take some huge adventures. We get to know all the characters a bit more. And, of course, there's plenty of kissing.

I'm currently writing the third and final book, Sweet Reckoning, for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month).

After earning a bachelors in Creative Writing from George Mason University and a masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Radford, Wendy taught high school English until becoming a mommy. She lives in Northern Virginia with her husband, daughter, and son. Sweet Evil is her debut novel.

The sequel

Sweet Peril
by Wendy Higgins

Expected publication: April 30th 2013 by HarperTeen

Summary (Goodreads):

Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?
