13 Random Facts

1. I speak 7 languages, to varying degrees: English, French, Japanese, Anishinaabemowin/Ojibwe, Latin, Spanish, and Middle Egyptian.

2. I used to play bass clarinet in an orchestra. I also play piano and violin, and dabbled in flute and trumpet.

3. I danced ballet for about 10 years, but I wasn’t flexible enough to continue.

4. I started reading by myself at 2, and reading novels at 4.

5. The first novel I read was Ozma of Oz.

6. In middle school, I used to pass out fan fiction I’d written at recess. It was usually about Sailor Moon, Power Rangers, or Xena.

7. I grew up in Deep River, which is the small town Katie’s grandparents live in in The Paper Gods. I used to read books, make up stories, and draw Fantasy maps in the stretching forests behind my house.

8. I once ran into a bear on the way to school. He didn’t see me, though, so I just went around the long way.

9. I’m a cosplayer, which means I make elaborate anime/game-related costumes and wear them to anime cons. (You can see my cosplay at http://www.pinterest.com/amandasunbooks/my-cosplay/ )

Here's one of Amanda's costumes--as Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland!

10. Besides The Paper Gods, I’ve also written a story about a farm boy and a unicorn, in the anthology Tesseracts Fifteen. You can get it on Kindle here: http://dft.ba/-7DPM

11. I’m a Nerdfighter. DFTBA and Best Wishes! My friend and I once drove 11 hours to meet John Green.

12. I’m a gamer. My favs are the Zelda and Final Fantasy series.

13. I have a not-so-secret crush on Matsumoto Jun. Shhhhh!

More about Amanda!

I’m a YA author and proud Nerdfighter. I was born in Deep River, Canada, a very small town without traffic lights or buses, and where stranger safety is comprised of what to do if you see a bear—or skunk. I started reading fantasy novels at 4 and writing as soon as I could hold a pencil. Hopefully my work’s improved since then.

In university I took English, Linguistics, and Asian History, before settling into Archaeology, because I loved learning about the cultures and stories of ancient people. Of course, I didn’t actually become an archaeologist—I have an intense fear of spiders. I prefer unearthing fascinating stories in the safety of my living room.

The Paper Gods is inspired by my time living in Osaka and travelling throughout Japan. That and watching far too many J-Dramas. I currently live in Toronto with my husband and daughter. When I’m not writing, I’m devouring YA books, knitting nerdy things like Companion Cubes and Triforce mitts, and making elaborate cosplays for anime cons.

Ink
(Paper Gods #1)
by Amanda Sun

Published June 25th 2013 by Harlequin Teen

Blurb (Goodreads):
On the heels of a family tragedy, the last thing Katie Greene wants to do is move halfway across the world. Stuck with her aunt in Shizuoka, Japan, Katie feels lost. Alone. She doesn’t know the language, she can barely hold a pair of chopsticks, and she can’t seem to get the hang of taking her shoes off whenever she enters a building.

Then there’s gorgeous but aloof Tomohiro, star of the school’s kendo team. How did he really get the scar on his arm? Katie isn’t prepared for the answer. But when she sees the things he draws start moving, there’s no denying the truth: Tomo has a connection to the ancient gods of Japan, and being near Katie is causing his abilities to spiral out of control. If the wrong people notice, they'll both be targets.

Katie never wanted to move to Japan—now she may not make it out of the country alive.

Thank you Michelle for putting the giveaway on your blog. I've been having trouble with my first chapter so having Amanda's opinion would be great. Fingers crossed.
