Blurb (Goodreads):
Baalboden has been ravaged. The brutal Commander's whereabouts are unknown. And Rachel, grief stricken over her father's death, needs Logan more than ever. With their ragged group of survivors struggling to forge a future, it's up to Logan to become the leader they need—with Rachel by his side. Under constant threat from rival Carrington's army, who is after the device that controls the Cursed One, the group decides to abandon the ruins of their home and take their chances in the Wasteland.
But soon their problems intensify tenfold: someone—possibly inside their ranks—is sabotaging the survivors, picking them off one by one. The chaos and uncertainty of each day puts unbearable strain on Rachel and Logan, and it isn't long before they feel their love splintering. Even worse, as it becomes clear that the Commander will stop at nothing to destroy them, the band of survivors begins to question whether the price of freedom may be too great—and whether, hunted by their enemies and the murderous traitor in their midst, they can make it out of the Wasteland alive.
In this daring sequel to Defiance, with the world they once loved forever destroyed, Rachel and Logan must decide between a life on the run and standing their ground to fight.
My Thoughts:
Defiance, the first book of Defiance trilogy, was one of the few books I gave 5 stars last year. It is one of my best reads in 2013 and just imagine how excited I am to start the sequel, Deception.
Rachel, Logan, and the survivors of the Baalboden struggles to live a new life with Logan as their new leader. In Defiance, I met the two main characters, Rachel and Logan, with their fierce and strong personality and literally as how they fight. Now in Deception, they improved and became an even better characters. They become fiercer, stronger, sharper, and more responsible with their actions, especially that now they are being followed by the survivors.
Rachel spent a lot of time in struggling to the nightmares and conscience that's haunting her, and the urge to kill the Commander whenever he's near enough for her to advance. Although she's the same Rachel from the book one, a fearless and strong-willed heroine, Logan shines in this sequel. The story gave more spotlight to him not only because he became their new leader, but because of the sequence of events of the book, up until a big revelation was unfold and til the ending.
The first few chapters of the book bored me and made me put it down for a while and read other books. I am probably looking for the action Defiance has given me. When I picked up the book again, the action I was looking for welcomed me and gave me more than that. It was crazier this time. I was even more hooked the moment they sensed a traitor in the group. I had a few guesses and the result did shocked me, but not as it shocked me when a revelation came up with it. I can certainly say it's one of the shocking yet well-thought twist you'll find in a book.
Just like Defiance, Deception has the combination of a dystopian novel everyone would seek for with everything's being published today. Heart-stopping action and mystery, bitter-sweet romance, unforgettable and well-improved characters, a story that leads you to something more, and an ending that will take your breath away and promise an epic final book. It's like, the sequel brought not only the characters, but also the story to a whole new level. Deception was the sequel you could ask for. Another job well done for C.J Redwine!
