Celebrating Debutantes 2013: TL Costa (13 Random Facts + Giveaway)

My featured debut author for the day likes horror movies and Halloween. Let's find out if her debut novel has the certain theme!

TL Costa

13 Random Facts

1. I love cheesy horror movies. The crazier, the better.

2. I lived in Spain.

3. At the gym, I’ve been known to leap off treadmills mid-stride when a good idea for a scene hits me. I have to scribble it down or I’ll forget.

4. My favorite holiday is Halloween.

5. I have a very recent fascination with this trend towards massive beards. Duck Dynasty, the Red Sox-- beards seem to be in and I can’t figure out if I like the trend or not.

6. When I’m stuck on a certain scene I go outside and take a walk or a good, long run.

7. Cooking is a passion of mine.

8. All of the pens on my desk are pink. They have to be or else I’ll lose them in the piles of sticky notes and scene cards.

9. I’m a crazed gardener. I’d dig up my whole yard and plant vegetables if I could.

10. I think I can dance, but I’m not so sure that other people feel the same way.

(Sidenote: Same here. -.-)

11. I write between one to three notebooks full of character backstory and information before I sit down to write a manuscript.

12. When I moved to go to graduate school in a new city, I invited my entire class --six perfect strangers-- out for a beer. One of the people who took me up on my offer is now my husband.

(Sidenote: That sounds romantic! Can be from the contemporary books I read. :D)

13. I will watch any film that stars Duane the Rock Johnson. Don’t ask me why, I think it has something to do with the eyebrow. How does he get it to do that? Fascinating.

More about TL!

Tyler MacCandless can’t focus, even when he takes his medication- his older brother is in and out of rehab, and the only thing he doesn’t suck at is playing video games, which isn’t likely to get him into college.

Just when it seems like his future is on a collision course with a life sentence at McDonald’s, he’s asked to test a game for the Civil Air Patrol. If he scores high enough, it could earn him a place in flight school, but when the game turns out to be more than it seems, Tyler will have to figure out what’s really going on in time to prevent his own future from going down in flames.

Blurb (Goodreads):

When is a game not a game?

Tyler MacCandless can’t focus, even when he takes his medication. He can’t focus on school, on his future, on a book, on much of anything other than taking care of his older brother, Brandon, who’s in rehab for heroin abuse… again.

Tyler’s dad is dead and his mom has mentally checked out. The only person he can really count on is his Civilian Air Patrol Mentor, Rick. The one thing in life it seems he doesn’t suck at is playing video games and, well, thats probably not going to get him into college.

Just when it seems like his future is on a collision course with a life sentence at McDonald’s, Rick asks him to test a video game. If his score’s high enough, it could earn him a place in flight school and win him the future he was certain that he could never have. And when he falls in love with the game’s designer, the legendary gamer Ani, Tyler thinks his life might finally be turning around.

That is, until Brandon goes MIA from rehab and Tyler and Ani discover that the game is more than it seems. Now Tyler will have to figure out what’s really going on in time to save his brother… and prevent his own future from going down in flames.
