Celebrating Debutantes: Author Katie McGarry (Interview + Giveaway)

Learn about what best things happened to our today's feature debut author, her next project, unforgettable moment with a fan, recent thing that made her cry, and a lot more!

Say hello to....

Author Katie McGarry

"Pushing the Limits is a sexy hot novel that follows the emotional ups and downs of two teenagers that fall in love and realize, that no matter the situation they find themselves in, that there is always hope.

That is the message I want my fans/readers to walk away with—that love never fails and that there is always hope."

- KATIE McGARRY, a debut author of 2012

What are the best things that happened after your book was published?

Receiving e-mail messages, tweets, or facebook messages from readers who thanked me for getting the story right has been the best part of becoming published.

I poured a lot of emotion into Echo and Noah and it is very satisfying to know that people have connected with them and that the message of hope in the story is taking root.

Are you interested in writing with different genre or audience?

I love YA contemporary. It is my first love and I can’t imagine straying from it anytime soon, but…I secretly love dystopian novels.

Do you read reviews about your book?

Yes and no. When people tweet me, facebook, e-mail, or message me about a review I’ll check it out. Otherwise, I don’t hunt for them. I truly appreciate everyone who has taken the time to read my book and write a review, but I like to try to stay centered on my current writing projects.

What is your (best/fun/unforgettable) moment with a fan?

At BEA, I met a wonderful group of book bloggers and one of them had read the book.

When she began telling me how much she enjoyed it, I think I went into shock. My brain
stopped working, my heart paused, and I froze like a deer in headlights. There was no way she was talking about me. I mean, is it possible that someone really enjoyed my book?

She was very gracious when my brain began functioning again and I was able to stutter
out a “Thank you.” I’m happy to say that we still keep in contact!

(Sidenote: I personally loved her answer to this one. :D)

Who is the character on your book who has the most response from your readers?

Echo has been the character that my readers have messaged me privately the most about. There have been quite a few people who have been able to relate to her emotional pain.

The character I’ve read the most about in reviews has been Noah. He has touched the hearts of my readers.

Isaiah and Beth are very close runner-ups. Lots of people have fallen for Isaiah and are very concerned for him with Beth’s book, Dare You To, due for release in 2013.

Was there any book/s from other debut author of 2012 that you loved?

Yes! Article 5 by Kristen Simmons, Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally, and Something Like Normal by Trish Doller.

Author you dream to work with?

I’m a huge fan of Simone Elkeles. I would love to work with her!

(Sidenote: I'm also a fan of hers!)

Fave character from a book (not yours)?

Ponyboy Curtis from S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders.

What's your next project?

I’m currently working on revisions for Dare You To. This follows the story of Noah’s best friend, Beth. It is scheduled to be released in 2013.

Share us one embarrassing moment you've had.

While giving a speech during my sophomore year in high school, I passed out and totally embarrassed myself in front of a guy I was secretly crushing on.

What's the recent thing that made you cry?

I read essays for a contest for Gilda’s Club by teenagers who were affected by cancer. Their stories were heartfelt and absolutely touched my soul. Most of them left me in tears.

When's your birthday?

March.

Do you read/believe in horoscopes?

I think they are fun to read, but no, I don’t believe in them.

Fave movie?

Casablanca.

Fave artist/song?

Oh, I have way too many. I’m a big music freak. Right now I’m currently in love with Taylor Swift’s Red album and I always enjoy listening to old favorites like Guns n Roses and Eminem.

(Sidenote: I said the word, Ohmygod, between gasp when I spotted Taylor's name and Red album. Seriously. I love that girl and I'm also in love with her new album! And Katie gave me a *virtual* high-five via email! :D ((The music that is currently playing on this blog is from Red. ;)) I am also a music freak. :D)

How did you celebrate the publishing of your book? :)

I went out to dinner with my husband and kiddos!

by Katie McGarry

Date published: July 31, 2012

Summary (Goodreads):

No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.

Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.
