Finished Reading:
I've finally read Unhinged by A.G Howard. I LOVE it! You can check out my review here.

Next up is Messenger of Fear by Michael Grant. I wasn't expecting this book from Hardie Grant Egmont but thank you!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, originally started by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that highlights upcoming book releases everyone is waiting on.

Top Ten Clues You're Clueless
by Liz Czukas

Expected publication: December 9th 2014 by Harper Teen

Blurb (Goodreads):
Top Five Things That Are Ruining Chloe’s Day

5) Working the 6:30 a.m. shift at GoodFoods Market

4) Crashing a cart into a customer’s car right in front of her snarky coworker Sammi

3) Trying to rock the “drowned rat” look after being caught in a snowstorm

2) Making zero progress with her crush, Tyson (see #3)

1) Being accused—along with her fellow teenage employees—of stealing upwards of $10,000

Chloe would rather be anywhere than locked in work jail (aka the break room) with five of her coworkers . . . even if one of them is Tyson. But if they can band together to clear their names, what looks like a total disaster might just make Chloe’s list of Top Ten Best Moments.

I enjoyed Liz's first book, Ask Again Later. I'm looking forward in reading more from her and this one sounds really cute! Love the cover, too.

Book Review: Unhinged by A.G Howard

Unhinged
by A.G Howard

Series: Splintered #2
Genre: YA, fantasy, fairytale re-telling
Published December 17th 2013 by Scholastic Australia
Source: Bought
Local purchase/order: Fullybooked * National Bookstore

Blurb (Goodreads):
Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she's always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she'll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

My Thoughts:
*Might be spoiler-y to those who haven't read Splintered yet.

Unhinged is the surprise sequel of the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland gothic retelling, Splintered. Splintered was originally a standalone novel but because of its brilliance, it was made into a trilogy. I LOVE Splintered so much, it's one of my best reads in 2013, and I was really excited when I found out that there will be a sequel and it has Morpheus on the cover! Unfortunately, because of my crazy year and to-review books, I wasn't able to read Unhinged ASAP. Until Splintered and Unhinged Read-a-Long came. I decided to FINALLY read this book and maybe other fans and new readers could read with me too, so I hosted the read-a-long via @AGHowardPH.

When the time came that I was gonna read Unhinged (I've been sniffing the pages and adoring the design and plum-colored text), I felt somehow...scared. Even standalone, I greatly appreciated and contended on how Splintered ended. I realized then that I wasn't sure if I'd like to know what this book contains, what will happen to Alyssa, Jeb, and Morpheus, and I'm not prepared on whatever emotional mess this book might bring like the first one did. Will it be worth it? Or in the end, will I hope I never read this book?

After a year of her adventures on the real Wonderland, Alyssa thought she won't be coming back or have a peaceful life with her parents, Jeb, and her new art despite of the Wonderland memories and the presence of a certain someone--Morpheus. But it was just the beginning. Queen Red is back and Wonderland needs her. Only Alyssa can help to save both worlds.

Let me comment first on Morpheus. The one that bugged me the most. Morpheus, Morpheus, Morpheus! I'm crazy about this moth dude. Not the way I-love-him-so-much crazy, but why-are-you-being-like-this?! crazy. Morpheus drove me crazy first on Splintered. His motives and feelings for Alyssa seems so contradicting, I'm not sure who or what he really cares for. I did end up liking him and Jeb and I'm torn between them. I remembered I declared them as one of the best and worst love triangle ever because I both love these dudes and hate the feeling of one being left broken and alone. But Morpheus triggered my over-thinking brain.

Like I just said, I'm not sure what his real motives are. He lies a lot and it pisses me off. So does Alyssa. I noticed that all Alyssa gets annoyed with him more than having feelings for him. It seems that when he's away--physically--she doesn't have or think about her feelings for him (well, except when she remembers their past). When he's near (like, him teasing or seducing her), that's the only time she'll feel the attraction. When I think about it, I would say that it could be because he's a moth and a fae and it could all be about the fae's power to seduce. Well, that's just my theory.

Jeb, on the other hand, has won my heart a little more than Morpheus on Splintered. But it didn't grew since I barely feel him on this book. I guess because it's Morpheus on the cover, it should be mostly about him. And Ensnared must be [mostly] about Jeb since it's in him on the cover. Again, my theory. I cannot wait until I read that book, though. I can't wait to learn more about Jeb--which I think there WILL be revelations.

I expected Alyssa will be back on Wonderland and imagined what may happen. But the entire book was spent in the real world with some creepiness and more twists, revelations, and madness. I am so relieved that this book wasn't a mess like I was afraid to happen. And the ending has just left me breathless and even more excited. It was as amazing as Splintered. Yet, this one's fresher since it's more of Anita's imagination that continued from her twisted dark retelling of Lewis Carroll's Alice Adventures in Wonderland.

Unhinged started and ended with a flourish of A.G Howard's pretty words. Just like she did on Splintered. I've always adored her writing. Not only can she be a wordsmith but also a master in story-telling. Her characters lived in her art of writing. They become powerful because of how she string her words. And even if fantasy, they become realistic. I'm just in love with this series. Until now I'm on a hangover. Only Ensnared or Jeb or Morpheus can cure me. Imaginative, moving, emotional, magical, magnificent, beautiful--these words aren't enough to describe how perfect this series is. I would recommend it to everyone. I cross my fingers for a movie adaptation too.

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading:

I'm currently reading the second book from Splintered trilogy, Unhinged by A.G Howard for Splintered and Unhinged Read-A-Long I'm hosting (@AGHowardPH). I've waited sooo long to finally read this!

Finished Reading:
I didn't realized I've finished FOUR books since my last Wednesday post!
I've finished two middle grade titles--both contemporaries but opposite mood/tone. At Your Service by Jen Malone is a light and funny novel, while Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms by Katherine Bundell is touching.

I've read and reviewed Summer in New York collection--an anthology by six award-winning authors for a blog tour. I also finished re-reading Splintered by A.G Howard for the read-a-long mentioned above. I'm still thinking whether I'd write a re-review or not.

(Click on the titles for my reviews.)

Read Next:

I'm reading Words and their Meanings by Kate Bassett next. I got this from Netgalley and been looking forward to read it. The main character's a writer!

"Game of Thrones meets the Grimm's fairy tales in this twisted, fast-paced romantic fantasy-adventure about Sleeping Beauty's daughter, a warrior princess who must fight to reclaim her throne." -- THIS sentence is too much. I want this book NOW.

Blurb (Goodreads):
Amazon #1 Bestselling series in *New Release* for Clean Romance

Six Award-Winning Authors have contributed new stories to A Timeless Romance Anthology: Summer in New York. Readers will love this collection of six contemporary romance novellas, all set in renowned New York City with one thing in common: Romance.

In USA Today bestselling author Janette Rallison’s delightful novella, JOB HAZARDS, Lydia Robinson is posing as a prostitute. Undercover of course. Lydia’s job as a police officer hasn’t reeled in her prince charming yet. That is, until Harrison Aldridge, old high school flame, pulls up to the corner to rescue the fallen damsel. Lydia can’t exactly give Harrison the truth without blowing her cover, and it takes a series of mishaps and another whole set of misunderstandings before Lydia will even consider letting Harrison back into her life.

In Heather B. Moore’s enchanting novella, A TASTE OF SUN, Winona Grant embarks on a summer-long visit to NYC to house-sit for her great-aunt after a nasty break-up with her boyfriend Paul. But when her aunt commissions neighbor Steve Monti to tour Winona around, they strike a deal. Winona has too many deadlines to play tourist, and Steve is looking for a distraction from his looming gallery opening. So Steve goes on the tours by himself, and Winona reports back to her aunt as if she’d gone too. The longer this happens, the more Winona wants to change her mind. Seeing the city with Steve might be the perfect solution to forgetting about Paul.

In Luisa Perkins’s sweet romance novella, DULCE DE LECHE, Marisol is desperate for another nanny job after being unfairly fired from her previous position. She has only two more semesters of college, but she’s too proud to ask her wealthy parents for financial help. When her potential new employer, a single father working long hours as an anesthesiologist, decides she’s too young and pretty to hire, she practically begs him for the job. Darius finally agrees, and as he watches her work miracles with his Asperger’s son, he realizes there is much more to Marisol than he first believed.

In TAKE A CHANCE, a captivating story by Sarah M. Eden, Miguel Santos has a stopover in New York. When the announcement of delayed flights comes over the PA system, Miguel is looking at spending several hours at the airport. Determined to get comfortable for the long wait, he’s surprised when he spies a familiar face amongst the stranded passengers: Jane Schoonenburg, the last person he expected to see. Three months have passed since he asked Jane to marry him—three months of misery. And now he knows that he must talk to her, if only to find out why she broke his heart.

Annette Lyon’s entrancing novella, FIRSTS AND LASTS, begins with Dani’s last week in New York. She’s failed in her dreams to catch a break as an actress and is now ready to return home and dust herself off. As she visits the places on her final to-see list, she meets Mark, another New York City transplant with big dreams. Except Mark hasn’t given up on his. As they spend the day together, Dani realizes that even though she hasn’t hit the “big time” she might be living her dream after all. Only problem: she has a one-way ticket back home.

In Lisa Mangum’s whimsically titled story: &, Lucy is riding a wave of success at having found a bestselling novel in the slush pile at an exclusive New York publishing house. If only her personal life was storybook perfect as well. Her relationship with Devon is on the rocks, and even though she's been put in charge of the house while her boss is gone on business, Lucy isn't sure she's up to the task.

My Thoughts:

Summer in New York Collection is a romance anthology by six award-winning authors such as Janette Rallison, Heather B. Moore, Luisa Perkins, Sarah M. Eden, Annette Lyon, and Lisa Mangum. I am excited to read this book because it has Janette's work in it! I have read two books from her and it was amazing--I'd read more from her! Although I haven't read any from the other authors mentioned, I'm also looking forward in reading their short stories too. "Clean" romance is also a plus factor. Since this is an anthology (and my first time to review one), I have short reviews and rating on each story. My overall rating (where I added all rating and divided it to 6) is shown below.

The first story was from Janette Rallison. It was called Job Hazards. Okay, so you might say that I'm bias, but I'm not. Janette showed her readers again how brilliant she is even with a short story. I find Job Hazards really cute, light, funny, and romantic. I was tingling all over! Even if this was only a short story, I felt like I've read an entire novel. It has its important details such as the history and personal backgrounds. It was satisfying--I love it! (Rating: 5/5)

The tingling continues on A Taste of Sun by Heather B. Moore. Like Job Hazards, this story felt like an entire novel because of the sequence and ending. The pace was fast but won't left you hanging or lacking. I like that the art--their passion--was part of the two main characters' lives and connected them more. (Rating: 4/5)

Dulce de Leche by Luisa Perkins had a nice plot. I found the idea of relationship building and characters admirable. However, the story seems to skip and left the important parts missing like how or when did the relationship or how they see each other bloom. It was more like of a rush than showing. (Rating: 3/5)

The following story by Sarah M. Eden, Take a Chance, kept me guessing from beginning to end. Not that it's mystery--it's not. I think I've kept on guessing because I didn't expect or have an idea about the characters' story. I also have hopes on the ending, which didn't happened, so it all turn out to be surprising. But despite of guessing and hoping, it has one of the cutest couple on this anthology. I really liked them. This is an entertaining one. (Rating: 4/5)

Firsts and Lasts by Annette Lyon was, to be honest, unfortunately my least favorite on this anthology. The two characters had a crooked start and the "next days"--even the beginning--are more of telling. Include the fact the they had the same sad story. I was glad they found happiness and home in each other. (Rating: 3/5)

& by Lisa Mangum was an interesting read. I love that the main characters love books and words. I felt the connection not only between them, but also me to them. There was significance they felt with each other even if they just met. It's like you've met your soulmate. I also love that the meaning of the title was explained and lived by the characters in the story. That's what happens when book people talk about books. Clever author! (Rating: 5/5)

Overall, it was an enjoyable read. I've seen and experienced New York in different POVs combined with swoony romances. I would recommend this anthology to all romance readers--whether YA, NA, or adult. Taste sun, NY, happiness, and love!

ARC Review: Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms by Kathleen Bundell

Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms
by Kathleen Bundell

Genre: MG, contemporary
Published August 26th 2014 by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Source: Publisher
Local purchase/order: Fullybooked * National Bookstore

Blurb (Goodreads):
Even a life on the untamed plains of Africa can’t prepare Wilhelmina for the wilds of an English boarding school in this lovely and lyrical novel from the author of Rooftoppers, which Booklist called “a glorious adventure.”

Wilhelmina Silver’s world is golden. Living half-wild on an African farm with her horse, her monkey, and her best friend, every day is beautiful. But when her home is sold and Will is sent away to boarding school in England, the world becomes impossibly difficult. Lions and hyenas are nothing compared to packs of vicious schoolgirls. Where can a girl run to in London? And will she have the courage to survive?

From the author of the “witty, inventively poetic” Rooftoppers comes an utterly beautiful story that’s sure to be treasured.

My Thoughts:
*This review is based on advance reading copy.

Wilhelmina Silver or Will, grew up with animals and beautiful view of the sunrise in their farm in Africa. When her fate went twisted, she was sent to a boarding school in England--where Will obviously doesn't fit with her disheveled look, strong personality, and indifference with girls. The farm is all her life, Will cannot live in the urbanity of London.

Reading about Will's life is a painful thing to do. At first I got bored but after the twist, the story got more exciting..and more heartbreaking. Despite her struggles, Will remained strong and courageous. There were even a lot of times I forget she's only a child (like 7 or 8 years old, I'm not sure!) In the end, I'm thankful that the author gave Will (and readers) something to be contented and happy about. At least it wasn't entirely tragic. I'm glad for it, I had a good sleep that night.

This book encompasses love for family, friendship, and home. This book proves the saying/idiom, "Home is where the heart is." Realistic and touching, Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms will tug every reader's heart. I would recommend this book not only to young readers, but also to mature readers.

Blurb (Goodreads):
Thirteen-year-old Chloe Turner wants nothing more than to follow in Dad’s footsteps as a respected concierge in a posh NYC hotel. After all, living at a hotel is heaven, and perks like free concert tickets and all-access passes to boutiques, restaurants, and attractions aren’t too shabby either.

When the spoiled brat child of an important guest is only placated by some quick thinking on Chloe’s part, Chloe is awarded the role of Junior Concierge. But she might be in over her head when tasked with tending to the every whim of three royal guests: a twelve-year-old princess who can’t stand Chloe, a cute fourteen year-old prince(!), and their ten-year-old sister, who has a nasty knack for getting herself lost. After the youngest princess slips Chloe’s care, Chloe and the remaining royals must embark on an event-filled hunt for her through NYC’s best tourist spots.

My Thoughts:

*This review is based on advance reading copy. There might be some changes in the finished copy.

After the successful challenging task of making a particular guest..smile, Chloe became the Junior Concierge where she handles the younger guests on the hotel. When she thought this guest was challenging, say hello to the royal guests. What do royals need when they have everything?

Chloe is a positive and fun girl to be with (in my case, read with). She's a nice and clever girl who everyone loved--including the guests--well, maybe except for Mr. Whilpers. I have also come to like this girl. Her personality matches the cute cover and good vibes of this book.

I enjoyed At Your Service! It is fun and hilarious read. I like the adventures and the overall good story. This book is recommended to teens, tweens, and even younger audience. Prepare to be toured in NYC by Hotel St. Michele's very own Junior Concierge--it's like you are the guest!

*Thank you Rino and Simon & Schuster for the review copy!
