     Painfully cold water swallowed me whole. I sloshed and screamed and groped for the edge of the ice. I grabbed hold of a corner and started to pull myself up. It broke off. I started to sink again. The cold pressed on my face like a vice. My hair floated up above my head. Rudy’s fingers clutched at my wrist. He tugged on my arm until my head broke the surface. 
     “Rudy!” I gasped, spraying him with the cold mouthful of water I had almost
swallowed. 
     “Hold on, Candy! I got you!” 
     As he strained to pull me out, the chunk of ice under his feet gave way. He slid into the water, on top of me, my body blocking his from falling all the way in. I hugged his legs, nearly pulling him down with me as I crawled up them like a frozen lobster. His muscles tightened as he helped me scrape my way up his rugged torso until my left ear rested on his chest and I could feel his heartbeat thumping louder and faster than mine. 
     “Are you all right?” he asked. 
     For a moment I felt safe. Then his face went ashen. He squeezed me hard,
flipping me off of him, onto my side. He scrambled the rest of the way out of the hole shouting, “Run!” 
     We were not alone.

 About The Author

Candace Jane Kringle is a junior at North Pole High. She likes candy canes,
unicorn races, and making snow angels. Her father is the most well-known and
beloved toymaker and toy distributor in the world. Her memoir, North Pole
High: A Rebel Without a Claus, is her first book. After high school, she
plans to enroll at North Pole University and write more books, maybe even some
fiction. :)
