Summary (Goodreads):

Charlie thought his summer was going to end like every other summer before it. With a growing sense of forboding and a waning sense of freedom. Until Tane landed on his front lawn in a crumpled heap claiming to be from heaven. A place much darker and much greater than he’d ever imagined. Tane is on a mission to find a Septar, a citizen of Fismuth that was left behind when she was supposed to have been taken. And when she enlists the help of Charlie and his friends, she pulls them into a world of danger, love, and ultimately, heavenly rewards.

My Thoughts:

As the title says it: Wingless. This book is not about angels. But they do come from Heaven. Who landed--practically landed--on Earth. Tane, a not-angel-but-Fismuthian girl has landed from Heaven to Earth to retrieve the Septar. A Fismuthian as well.

I don't quite get the story at first but eventually I've understood it. The next chapter (and a different POV) was fun (and funny) that hooked me up right away. The world building was well-thought, the characters are pretty cool but I was hoping for more action. More unforgettable scenes like the near-end and ending have.

I can really say that this is a good book. It was fun and new and mysterious and well-written. The ending was so amazing that made me want to read the next book. I must say that I'm really impressed with Cydney Lawson's debut book. The only thing I want to demand was..more

Recommendations:
For everyone who loves reading paranormal, urban fantasy (and every where this book's genre landed). Try this if you're feeling like you've had enough of angels. Good for your pre-Halloween!

Book cover comment/s:
I don't think the feathers matters coz it's already on the title itself: Wingless.

Thank you so much to the author, Cydney Lawson for providing me an ebook copy of Wingless.

Summary (Goodreads):

Lizzie Davenport has been reincarnated from Regency Era, England ... but she doesn't know it yet.

Then Drew Carmichael transfers into Lizzie's high school at the beginning of the year, and she feels a connection to him, almost like she knows him. She can't stop thinking about him, but whenever she tries talking with him about the mysteries behind her feelings, he makes it clear that he wants nothing to do with her. Reaching him is even more difficult because she has a boyfriend, Jeremy, who has started to become full of himself after being elected co-captain of the varsity soccer team, and her flirtatious best friend Chelsea starts dating Drew soon after his arrival. So why can't she get him out of her mind?

Even though Lizzie knows she should let go of her fascination with Drew, fighting fate isn't going to be easy.

Photobucket

My Thoughts:

Remembrance is a book about reincarnated romance. I have to admit that I've read few books with the same theme and I'm hoping to be welcome by fresh kind of story and not exactly like the others. Remembrance is quite different, alas.

While other books about reincarnation talks about how the two protagonist loved each other, can't live without the other, how these characters have these uber cheesy lines but NO explanation why do they lived generation after generation..Madow puts a clear answer to the Why? of a reader. And for me, it's kinda refreshing and a good news.

The book was told in Lizzie POV and started right away obsessing about this new *hot* guy. I appreciated that it started on what is the point of the story. What I didn't understand was, it started, goes on, and on and on and ended with her talking about Drew. Drew. Drew.
When they're finally together, I didn't feel the spark or the romance that much. I just sit there, read and felt nothing. Another thing: some of the scenes are predictable. I knew what will happen next even before it will. I dislike that on the books I read. I feel like I've known it before I read it.

I really liked the fact that this book was inspired of the song and music video of Taylor Swift's Love Story. Well, if it wasn't that obvious, I'm a huge fan of hers. There are times when I was reading the book I wanted to ask the author, Are you also a fan of Taylor? Because some parts were like, described her. Or her music. Especially the guy's name: Drew. Was it Drew from Teardrops on My Guitar? Lizzie. She was described as TS. Blonde, curly hair (which was obviously her because this book was inspired by Love Story, after all). And other simple things that remind me of Taylor. And then I thought, maybe it was just me being a fan.

Overall, it was nice, easy read. The only things that I didn't liked much about this book were the ones I've written above.

I received an ebook copy from the author in exchange of an honest review.

Recommendations:

For all romance readers. Who likes reincarnation-themed books. Taylor fan? :)

Book cover comment/s:

I loved it.

Summary (Goodreads):

Two months after dying, seventeen-year-old witch Graylee Perez wakes up in her twin sister Charlene’s body.

Until Gray finds a way back inside her own body, she’s stuck being Charlene every twenty-hour hours. Her sister has left precise instructions on how Gray should dress and behave. Looking like a prep isn’t half as bad as hanging out with Charlene’s snotty friends and gropey boyfriend.

The “normals” of McKinley High might be quick to write her behavior off as post-traumatic stress, but warlock Raj McKenna is the only person who suspects Gray has returned from the dead.

Now Gray has to solve the mystery of her death and resurrection and disentangle herself from Charlene’s body before she disappears for good.

Photobucket

My Thoughts:

I got an ebook copy from the author. She's hosting a giveaway with this book, but gave a coupon anyway on Smashwords for the hoppers. Wow, right? I've been really excited because this has been sitting on my Goodreads tbr for a while--and tada! Free from the author. ;) Thank you SO much, Nikki!

Look at the cover. A photograph of a beautiful girl who promised enchanting and magical adventure. But I didn't expect a lot from this book. As they say, looks can be deceiving. I might finish (or not finish) this with a frown on my face because I didn't liked it. And I did.

I've read several books with witches on it. All of them would end up dystopian or locked in a secluded world even if they started in a 'normal' time and surroundings. Entangled doesn't. From beginning to end, it was on a present 'normal' world, and it isn't what I didn't liked. I actually appreciated how Nikki maintained Entangled's world of 'normalcy' even though there are witches, warlocks and magics every where.

I must say that I REALLY hate Charlene. The evil twin sister. Forgive me for the word, but she's a bitch who knew nothing but being pretty and perfect and selfish. How could you do such things to your own twin sister? Or even an innocent person? And then she'd go gaga about a boy who's a jerk and a sure equivalent of her. If you could only see me how much I wanted to pull her perfect hair or cast a spell. UGH.

The other twin, on the other hand, Graylee, is a character you would definitely love to put on a book with an annoying character like Charlene. Who would knew that the next day you woke up is you're dead and on your twin sister's body? Sweet. But as I told you, she's the perfect match on Charlene's character. Graylee is not your typical sweet, too kind of female protagonist. I liked how she stands up for herself whoever contradicts or mess with her--as what she did on her sister. I liked her but there's some attitude I don't like or understand about her, like with her being short-tempered.

As much as you wanted to throw the book (or e-reader) because they're so annoying, with these type of characters, it surely will make a reader look forward into the next installment of the series, especially with the ending like this. It's not like I didn't liked this, btw, I have a frown on my face after reading this because I know I have lots of books to read for review and lots of school work to be done and have to ask the busy author a request (without knowing if it will be entertained or not) for the second book--and I. Can't. Read. It. Sooner.

Overall, the story is really good, all the characters are good and annoying and it just shows how much they are very effective to the readers (including me, of course) and this book and obviously, I can't wait to read Duplicity. I also liked the romance and looking forward to what will happen next especially with THE ending!

Recommendations:

If you love witches, magic and spells, paranormal, fantasy with a YA twist and haven't read this one, well, what are you doing?? Buy links are available above!

Book cover comment/s:

As much as I loved the cover, I don't see the connection of it to the story. It just shows that it will contain some magic, but I never encountered Graylee as literally frozen. Or maybe I'm wrong or missed something out.

Summary (Goodreads):

Ananna of the Tanarau abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to an allying pirate clan: she wants to captain her own boat, not serve as second-in-command to her handsome yet clueless fiance. But her escape has dire consequences when she learns the scorned clan has sent an assassin after her.

And when the assassin, Naji, finally catches up with her, things get even worse. Ananna inadvertently triggers a nasty curse — with a life-altering result. Now Ananna and Naji are forced to become uneasy allies as they work together to break the curse and return their lives back to normal. Or at least as normal as the lives of a pirate and an assassin can be.

Photobucket

My Thoughts:

I first came across this book while browsing on my first day in Netgalley. I noticed the cover and got interested then read the blurb. It is a kind of story I've never read yet, but seen only in movies. Assassins, deserts, pirates. My, it reminds me of Aladdin and Prince of Persia. (I know. I'm not much fan of movies before that's why I've only seen a few.) At first I've hesitate in reading (or requesting) it. But still, I requested because I think it'll turn out to be a really great read. Just imagine my excitement when I got approved!

The Assassin's Curse was told by Ananna's POV. Like the summary you've read above, she ran off because her pirate parents are planning wedding for her. Ananna is indeed a strong young lady who tried to live by herself without knowing anyone, without any money or food. And I liked her. Naji, the assassin hired to kill her was another story. The tables turned when he's suddenly tied into an unbelievably impossible curse with Ananna.

I really liked the uniqueness of the story (though I must remind you again, this is the first time I read this kind of story, I'm not sure--though possibly--if there's one or two you've read about assassins and pirates and curses) and the two main characters. They maintain what and who they are until the ending. It is also an adventure book that's set in different locations, with different supporting characters that I did not get bored, the antagonists remained mysterious and scary. Although there's an annoyed part of me--like Ananna felt--when all the hard work's done and still couldn't receive an award. (Ooh, you have to find that out by yourself.) The ending, however, made a promise of another exciting journey--and I can already see: greater journey--for the book two.

You see, I'm already excited for the second book when this one is just about to publish! How long will it take??

Recommendation:

Sci-fi, fantasy lovers, books or movies. Well, another given things: Pirates. Assassins. Magic. Who couldn't resist that?

Book cover comment/s:

I have told you that it reminds me of Aladdin and Prince of Persia, just the text alone. But I haven't told you how much I loved it!

Phoenix doesn’t realize until it is too late that the closer she gets to both Demitri and Luka the more she is plunging them all into a centuries old feud.

My Thoughts:

You think vampires that suck blood is creepy? Try flesh-eaters.

Taste's summary caught me the moment I read it. And the gorgeous cover. Just imagine: what are your consequences once you break the curfew? I never did, because I never had. In Barinkoff Academy, expect the unexpected.

I liked Kate's world of Zhamvys, and even their life. It's interesting and beautiful. They never came out as total creepy for me once I got to know them. I liked Demitri and Luka--they're just both irresistible. At first, I doubted Luka's intention but as read on, I liked him. While the female protagonist, Phoenix--I think she's just cool, but sometimes, hard-headed.

This book just reminds of what I think about Avalon High by Meg Cabot--not that they're exactly the same, but they're both great standalone. Who would've thought a lot can happen in one book? Most of the books right now are series. They would start great but we're always trying to find out if the next book/s will carry the greatness of the first. Taste is not a series but reading it makes me feel like I've read a summary of a wonderful series. It started it's heart-stopping point on the very first page and once you read on, the excitement never stops. And the ending? I think I need more but it's just great as it is. I really liked this book!

Book Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Insurgent
by Veronica Roth

Series: Divergent #2
Genre: YA, dystopian, sci-fi
Editions available: Hardcover, paperback,
Kindle, ebook, audiobook
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Source: Bought
Rating:

Summary (Goodreads):

One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

"New York Times" bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian "Divergent" series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

Photobucket

My Thoughts:

The--my--most awaited second book of the Divergent trilogy. I finally read.

I kept thinking, before its release, what Insurgent would bring and I can't seem to let myself imagine--maybe because I wanted to be surprised and right then, all I know is I WANT TO READ IT NOW. And now that I read it, I have mixed emotions.

Insurgent continued Divergent's interesting, captivating and heart-stopping debut. If I could, and not so busy, I would never put the book down and finish it in one sitting, and at the same time, I don't want to finish it right away because I know it will be eternity before the last book. LAST book.

Insurgent, was indeed, still action-packed. The mystery grew and new heartbreaking and oh-no scenes. I also loved Tris and Tobias' romance, both swoon-worthy and--get ready!--heartbreaking.

The ending was another cliffhanger and makes me want to grab Veronica Roth and force her to finish the third book. Kidding. I wouldn't be that harsh. Haha. But seriously? I want it now.

It's just saddening that the trilogy would soon end. Why does epic books only last three books? Why?

It was great, but if I rated Divergent 5 hearts, I'd give Insurgent 4.5.

Check out my review for Divergent (book 1) and Allegiant (book 3).

Summary (Goodreads):

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is--she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are--and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

My Thoughts:

Divergent was one of the books I regretted I judged by it's cover. When I first saw it, I know I don't want to read it or it's not for me. But then a blogger recommended me this, saying it was really great and then I saw that it was Reader's Choice on Goodreads, so I gave it a try.

Did I mention that I regretted it?

The moment I'm into it, I thank Heavens that I read it. After reading, I realized and appreciated the meaning of the cover. The Dauntless sign. Like the main female character, Tris Prior, Divergent was the kind of book that is fierceful.

It made me gasp, made my heart pound, kept me awake in the late nights of reading, and in every turn of the page, makes me admire how it was beautifully written and told. After reading it, I'm all like, Wow. It's really intense. Even in the romance part, it has the appeal. It has the right amount of swoon-worthy moments of Tris and Four (btw, I also love the idea of Four's nicname and the nicname itself), not too cheesy--that'll make you puke--and not too innocent.

Divergent was the book of my two firsts. (1) First dystopian read, and (2) first action read. I never thought I'd love this kind of book. I'm all romance and contemporary type of reader before. And now, because of Divergent, I fell in love with dystopian and action books. The way it takes me away from reality and make me feel like I'm the female protagonist that for a moment, I believe I am strong. This book also made me not judge the book by it's cover, along with The Hunger Games. Those kind of books really rocks.

I love this book!

Veronica Roth has a big future with her debut album. Congratulations!

Book Review: Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Delirium
by Lauren Oliver

Series: Delirium #1
Genre: Dystopian, YA, romance

Rating:

Summary (Goodreads):

THEY SAY that the cure for Love
will make me happy and safe
forever.
And I've always believe them.
Until now.

Now everything has changed.
Now, I'd rather be infected
with love for the tiniest
sliver of a second than
live a hundred years
smothered by a lie.

My Thoughts:

Another dystopian tale, about a world where love is considered as a disease. It is forbidden and being treated before people got 'infected'.

Lena is the kind of girl who is obedient. She never break government rules and willing to be get cured. Then one day, weeks before her procedure, she fell in love. She learned how to lie, sneak and most of all: break rules. But no secret will remain hidden.

Lauren Oliver was proving a point in a creative way in this book series. Love, as forbidden and treated like a disease, was hard to resist. It is the most natural wonderful thing humans have. Love is also worth fighting for--even if your whole world--the world you thought was right--is against it.

Delirium was told in Lena's point of view, and the way the tale was being told, you'd know what kind of person she is. There are, honestly for me, dull parts and a lot of reminiscing--that made it looked like slow-paced story. I also noticed the repeated words like, run, run run. Think. Think. Think. that I feel like I am reading a poem. And poems in a dystopian novels reminds me of Matched. And then I started to realize that Delirium has somehow similarity with Matched.

But overall, it is a good read and I liked it. I'm hoping to read some with action scenes with Lauren Oliver one day, though.

Recommendations:

Dystopian, YA, romance readers. If you don't like/can't stand slow-paced books, then this is not for you.

Summary (Goodreads):

Godspeed was once fueled by lies. Now it is ruled by chaos. It’s been three months. In that time, Amy has learned to hide who she is. Elder is trying to be the leader he’s always wanted to be. But as the ship gets more and more out of control, only one thing is certain: They have to get off the ship.

Photobucket

My Thoughts:

In this second installment of Across The Universe trilogy, Elder becomes the Eldest--without changing his name--and leads Godspeed without phydus. But the question is, Can he handle the people now that they're awake?

As Amy and Elder thought they figured things out and it will be alright, they realized that really, they did not. More mysteries and lies have they found out and discovery that needs a decision to be made. I liked it like I liked the first book. It still holds its mysterious and intriguing appeal. But there's still something I'm looking for. After reading this book though, I became excited for the third installment because they're finally landing! I think the third book--Shades of Earth--will finally have the missing ingredient I've been looking for.

Recommendation:

Who liked and loved Across The Universe.

Book cover comment/s:

Again, the cover was fantastic! Now Amy and Elder was standing and Amy's like pointing outside. It does connect on the story more than Across The Universe's.

Alternate cover/s:

I think this alternate cover was like, the follow up cover of Across The Universe's alternate cover--the one with blue-green background and Amy's pointing (exactly what she does on the first cover of A Million Suns--only she's facing front here).

Summary (Goodreads):

A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

Photobucket

My Thoughts:

You know you'll always choose your family even if your other option is your life--your comfort zone. Amy chose to be frozen cargo together with her parents on a spaceship called Godspeed to be awaken the time they land in their new home. New planet--Centauri-Earth. Being frozen is like sleeping without really sleeping. Hundred years of sleeping--but aware of your environment, anyway--until the spaceship lands into the new world. But Amy was awaken ahead of time--by someone, who she could never thought could do it in the end. She struggles to hide in a closed space from the people living in Godspeed who all thought she's a freak--with her red hair and sudden appearance. She had to get a grip and do her best to not to wake her parents while finding out the mystery of life and people in Godspeed.

Elder, the Eldest--or the leader--in training is all eyes and eyes to the current Eldest; a diligent student--until Amy comes. Suddenly the world he's born to  is not what he thinks it is. Mysteries came, like frozen people was being murdered and Godspeed people, and everything he learned growing up and being taught by Eldest was all lie, according to Amy as she tells life in Sol-Earth.

This book is rather mysterious, intriguing and full of lies than a love story within a closed space as I first thought (because of the cover). I've never read across the universe type of novel before and this book approached fresh to me. It's interesting and new and I liked it, but I feel like there's something lacking to make it perfect.

Recommendations:

Dystopian lovers. Readers who'd like to try out of this world story (though this not includes aliens).

Book cover comment/s:

Breathtaking. I loved it. Very out of this world. BUT as I said above, it would appear a love story when you first saw it, and the story inside is not what you expect.

Alternate cover/s:

*From now on, I'll be featuring alternate covers along with my book review posts. Unlike before, I only feature it whenever I wanted to.

The first alternate cover was almost the same as the original cover except that this one has white background between Amy and Elder. The third cover has the same concept with the original but this one's obviously animated and with green background, German edition. It also has different title. The fourth one is like the blueprint of Godspeed. I liked it second best. The fifth's Greek edition.
