Feb Feels presents The Lunar Chronicles 2015: Interview + Giveaway

Welcome to the third day of Feb Feels presents The Lunar Chronicles! Today is a very special day because I'm featuring some fun Q&A with the brilliant mind behind this magnificent series, Marissa Meyer, to fangirl with (all over again) PLUS a giveaway!

These set of questions were asked by readers from Goodreads and Marissa Meyer answered them personally. I cannot feature all but if you want to check it out, click here. Here are the questions and answers that caught my interest. From fangirling to the series, to Marissa's new series, and so much more!

Note: Careful on what you read if you haven't read the books. You might read some spoilers.

***

If you were to change something in the previous books what would you change?

If I could go back and change something, I would make the Lunar gift less powerful. Winter is mostly set on Luna, so we're in a society surrounded by people with the ability to manipulate and control, and it's really complicated parts of the plot for me! I've been able to make it work just fine, but I could have saved myself a lot of heartache by putting more restrictions on Lunars from the start.

Hi Marissa! I just wanted to tell you that I got really excited when I first heard about Cinder, since I love books which are based on other stories... Sooo I was wondering if you had thought about writing more books like this, maybe based on The Little Mermaid or something like that?? :)

Marissa Meyer Thank you! I actually did write a short story retelling of The Little Mermaid (the Andersen story, not Disney in this case). The story is called The Little Android and can be read for free on my WattPad page.

In addition to fairy tales I'm also writing a book called Heartless, based on Alice in Wonderland. Beyond that, I don't have any more plans for retellings (my next series will be superhero based), but I do love fairy tales and wouldn't be surprised if I get inspired for more retellings in the future. We'll see!

Can you share any details about your superhero series?

Marissa Meyer Ooh, good question! Everything is subject to change, but right now I'm calling it the Gatlon series, and it's essentially about a group of kids who go to a school for superheroes, and have to stand up to kids from a rival school who are walking the thin line between heroics and villainy. Plus, you know... action, romance, comedy... all that good stuff.

Is there anything you could share with us about Winter? :D Any teasers or such?  ❤ Would love to know just about anything. Especially about Kai :D Will we see lots more of him in Winter?

Marissa Meyer I can't tell too much about Winter yet, but all of our main characters have plenty of page time in it (yes, including Kai!), plus there's just a whole lot of everything in this book, from fights to kissing...

Who would you date? Kai, Thorne, Wolf or Jacin???

Marissa Meyer Ha! Who WOULDN'T I date?? ;)

What is your biggest tip for writing a bad guy?

Marissa Meyer I would say it's so important to know WHY they're bad. It can be tempting to make a villain evil-for-the-sake-of-evil, but that's not very interesting. Ask yourself what happened in their past to make them the way that they are, and what are their motivations for doing the things that they do? Some famous writer (I don't know who...) once said that the villain believes they are the hero of the story, and I think it's important to keep that in mind.

Is it hard for you to keep track of characters (such as location, or keeping in character) at times when writing?

Marissa Meyer YES! I am constantly making lists of which characters are in a particular place and what it is they're doing there.

I also get confused all the time about weapons and injuries. I keep an ongoing file about who's been injured and what weapons or tools they have with them. Also - if a character has a gun, I try to keep track of how many times they've shot it so we don't get the Hollywood "neverending ammunition" syndrome. It can get really complicated.

Hello! After WINTER, will there be any more short stories or novellas after the final book has been released like your book, Fairest? Thanks!

Marissa Meyer There will be one more short story, currently titled "The Princess and the Guard" - it's obviously based on Winter and Jacin. :) I expect that will be released this summer sometime.

After that, I have some ideas of potential stories to add a bit more depth to the world, but nothing is cemented yet, and I am excited to move on to my other series. We'll see!

Can you estimate the page length of Winter? (I know it will be AMAZING!!! regardless) Additionally, what was the hardest obstacle when writing Cress?

Marissa Meyer Yes! The estimated (not-final) page count is posted on GoodReads at 800 pages, and that's going to be darn close!

Sidenote: 800 pretty pages! I cannot wait!

Who is your favorite character from the series of books "Lunar Chronicles"?

Marissa Meyer I don't think I have a favorite character (I adore them all for different reasons... even the bad guys!). That said, I enjoy writing the funny characters the most because they always make me laugh. I really enjoy writing Iko and Thorne. They're both just so ridiculous at times, but really heartfelt at others. They both knew who they were from the beginning, too, which makes my job a lot easier.

Whats it like to have books that so many people love?

Marissa Meyer It never stops being bizarre! I find that a lot of times when people compliment my books I feel like they're talking about someone else's books. It's really hard to connect the success of them to something that I wrote myself. Then you see the numbers - # of books sold, GoodReads ratings, etc. - and it just seems even stranger, like these things I concocted in my head have gone on to have a life completely separate from me.

I don't know if that makes sense. It's a weird thing to describe. :)

Will you write more books in The Lunar Chronicles universe after Winter?

Marissa Meyer Winter will conclude this series, but I do have some ideas for potential spin-offs set in this world. I'm talking to my publisher now. We'll see...

Have you cried at all while writing Winter?

Marissa Meyer Yes. Yes, I did. Though to be fair, sometimes I was crying from joy. ^_^

What was your inspiration for writing about the queen in your latest book? You had so many characters to choose from to write about. Why her?

Marissa Meyer Levana was one of the first characters I thought of when I decided to write a series of sci-fi fairy tale retellings, and I've long been fascinated by the evil queen from Snow White. I always wanted to know what would make a woman place so much value on her beauty that she would do horrible, unspeakable things just to stay the "Fairest of them all." So Levana's story has really been building in my head from the very beginning when I started writing this series.

Then as I was working on Winter, I found myself getting stuck on scenes that involved Levana and her relationships to Winter and Selene, so I decided to pause and write Levana's story. Once I gave it a chance, her story came pouring out of me, and I learned so much about her and made so many connections that I hadn't put together yet. It was definitely time to put her story on paper! And it did help me get past all those places that were giving me trouble in Winter, too, so it worked out really great. I'm just glad my publisher actually wanted to publish it, ha!

Marissa, what inspired you to make Snow White a person with dark skin, instead of leaving her the way that she's always been portrayed?

Marissa Meyer In my early, early conceptualizing for the series, I thought Winter would be your typical Snow White as described in the fairy tale: skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, hair as black as ebony.

However, one day not long into my planning process I was reading through a health and nutrition blog and I came across a photo of this beautiful black model with thick curly hair biting into a red apple. The second I saw that picture I thought - that's her! that's my princess! So Winter became black.

It's not a very scientific approach to character building, but that's the story, lol.

The beta readers have posted some pretty upsetting and terrifying reactions to really bad news in Winter, and the fandom (particularly on tumblr) is starting to freak out. Can you please give us ANY kind of re-assurance that we won't all want to curl up in a ball and cry all day after reading Winter? Anything at all? It's a long wait til November and we're doing our best to promote these books, but now we're scared.

Marissa Meyer Hahaha, I love my betas.  ❤

I can't give any hints as to what's going to happen in Winter, but I will ask you to trust me! I think / hope the readers will find it to be a satisfying conclusion to the series.

My daughter is in school right now, but she asked me to send this on her behalf: I'm reading Cress right now and I loved Cinder and Scarlet! Your writing is amazing! I love writing sci-fi and I want to be an author. I was wondering...how do you tie up your stories and talk about the past and have so many secrets, with it still being so interesting?

Marissa Meyer This is a great question! I spend A TON of time rearranging my plots, moving scenes and subplots around, and trying to maintain a balance of characters throughout each book. I try to balance action with reaction scenes, too, so that if you have one "dull" scene where you're giving the reader lots of new information, then I want the next scene to be more exciting and suspenseful. Or if you have to convey a lot of backstory or resolve some mysteries, try to do it in an interesting way.

SCARLET SPOILERS: For example, I could have had Cinder learn a lot more about her history and cyborg surgeries from Dr. Erland, but instead I decided to have her discover that information on her own when she stumbles across the underground lair where she was kept by Scarlet's grandmother. It was a much more interesting and visual way to uncover that information - for Cinder, and for the reader. (at least, I hope so, ha!)

Hi Marissa! i was wondering which couple do you enjoy writing scenes for the most in the series?

Marissa Meyer I love writing scenes for each of the couples - kissing scenes are always my favorite to write! I also love romantic tension scenes in general, where the characters get to be all awkward and dancing around their feelings...

I don't really have a favorite couple, though. They're all so different and they all have moments that I absolutely loved writing.

Feb Feels: 7 days of Valentines 2014 Wrap-Up

Welcome to the last day of Feb Feels: 7 days of Valentines! Let's take a look back from the whole week, shall we?

Feb Feels kicked off on February 9th. I had a short intro post where I talked about how I came up with the idea of this event and its name. I also defined what exactly Feb Feels is and list the complete schedule. Check it out here.

Second day, I collaborated Feb Feels with Music Monday--a weekly meme where I talked/feature about music. I defined a Filipino word "kilig", a perfect word for the Valentines season and I shared a "kilig" playlist and my theme songs for my so-called love life. Experience "kilig" here.

I had a Back-to-Back-to-Back reviews on the third day where I reviewed YA contemporary romance books such as The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. SmithEleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell, and The Distance Between Us by Kasie West.

I collaborated Feb Feels again with a weekly meme, the famous Waiting on Wednesday. I featured my 3 anticipated YA contemporary romance and also my top 3 favorite novels from the same genre.

One of the highlight of this event was my short interview with some of the amazing YA/NA contemporary romance authors of this generation: Katie McGarry, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Colleen Hoover, Gayle Forman, and Huntley Fitzpatrick. I had fun reading their answers and again, I learned more fun things about them. Thank you so much to the wonderful authors who joined and donated books/swag for the giveaway!

And speaking of the giveaway, there are lots of prizes to win from the sixth day of Feb Feels! Check out the books and swag the authors have for you!

Apart from the authors, I would like to thank everyone for your support on Feb Feels! It was fun organizing an another event where I continue to feature authors and their books and give you, my lovely  readers, excitement!

So...what did you think about Feb Feels? Would you recommend this to other people? Do you think I should do this annually just like Celebrating Debutantes? Do you have questions/requests? Any comments? Feel free to share your thoughts! I accept positive and negative  comments! :)

[Feb Feels: 7 days of Valentines 2014] YA/NA Contemporary Romance Author Interviews

Welcome! I have compiled short Q&As from different YA/NA contemporary romance authors for the fifth day of Feb Feels! The questions contains facts about the authors, their book/s, and other fun stuff--all with the romance/Valentines theme.

Interview with the author of Pushing The Limits (companion series), Katie McGarry. I recently came across on her new upcoming novel on Goodreads, Red at Night, and gosh, I so want to read it!

1)So far, whose story from your Pushing The Limits companion series is your favorite, and why?

Oh, that is so hard to pick as I love them all!

Pushing the Limits will always be special to me because it was the first book I published. Dare You To is one close to my heart as it is a story that is very personal to me. But Crash Into You... this one just makes me smile. I fell in love with Isaiah early on in the series and it was a joy to see him find true love.

Now, Take Me On will be out in May and this one has the possibility of surpassing the other three for me. This one was emotionally draining for me to write, but West made it worth the journey.

2)What was the last book/movie/song that made you fall in love?

I absolutely love Gena Showalter’s Alice in Zombieland series. There’s just something about Alice and Cole that makes me happy.

3)What's the first thing you notice (and like) on a guy?

His eyes. One of the first things I noticed about my husband was his beautiful green eyes.

Interview with Jennifer L. Armentrout, #1 New York Times and USA Today Best-Selling author of Wait For You series and Gamble Brothers series. She also had written several stand-alone novels and paranormal, sci-fi, and fantasy series including Lux series, Covenant series, and Dark Element series. Seriously, this woman writes a lot! ;D

1)We all knew that you write these hot novels that a lot of people loved. In which book of yours you think you've written the sexiest scene ever?

I think it's the underworld pool scene in Apollyon.

2)What's your favorite love song? Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine

3)What book did made you feel all the feels?  That's a tough one. If you're talking about one of my books, I'm going to go with Wait for You because of Cam.

The author of one of my favorite YA contemporary romance series, Slammed, is also here for an interview! #1 New York Times Best-Selling author Colleen Hoover had another success with her Hopeless series. Maybe Someday is her new upcoming novel that I'm sure a lot of people would love as well.

1)Does some of the romantic scenes from your books happened to you?

None of what happens in my books are things that have really happened to me. I really like taking scenarios I've never been in and trying to imagine how other people would react to or handle them, so my books all tend to be pretty far off from my real life.

2)If you were given a chance to write a song, what would it be about and what title would you give it?

Well, I did contribute some of the lyrics to Griffin Peteron's song, Maybe Someday, from the book, Maybe Someday, so I guess it would be called Maybe Someday and it would be about… well, it would be about the book, Maybe Someday lol.

3)What's your favorite/most romantic book/song/movie that you read/listened/watched?

My favorite romance has to be The Fault in our Stars by John Green. Incredible read. If you haven't read it yet, you're missing out.

This interview with International Best-Selling author, Gayle Forman, was taken from the Q&A when she had a book signing event here in Manila back in January 18th 2014. Her published novels If I Stay and Just One Day are both duets. (The questions and her answers are not the exact words from the forum, but it's pretty close. I forgot to record it and now my memory is fuzzy. >.<)

1)Do you have plans in branching out of contemporary?

I love writing about the world we live in and I don't want to leave it. And since some people see If I Stay as a paranormal book, I think I already branched out of the genre.

2)Are you involved in the making If I Stay movie?

Yes, I'm involved in the making of If I Stay movie. I have read the script and cried four times. It was embarrassing.

3)Most of your books focus on telling events that happened in a single day. What is it about a one day event that seems appealing to you? (Q&A from Blackplume)

One day event can catalyze change to anyone, like with Just One Day and Just One Year where a one day in Paris had been a catalyst for Willem and Allyson. And that’s why those books take over a year, because that day catalyzed the change.

My Life Next Door author Huntley Fitzpatrick also answered fun questions! My Life Next Door is Huntley's debut novel that was published in 2011. The companion novel The Boy Most Likely To will be published in 2015. But for now, readers are waiting for her new upcoming novel, What I Thought Was True, out in April 15th.

1)What's the most incredible thing a fan has done to you?

To me, just reading the book is plenty incredible.

Writing to ask me “what happens next” is something that never fails to make my day. That my characters are alive enough that people wonder where they go, after turning the last page, is incredible.

2)I read an interesting fact about you on your Goodreads bio: "She kept an exhaustively thorough journal which frightened her boyfriends but has proved very useful in her career as a writer." So does that mean My Life Next Door or one of your [upcoming] books has something related to your boyfriend/ex(es)?

Yes, I kept them, and yes, they were really detailed. The main liability was that the boy I liked would say “wait, how do you remember that?” when I referenced some moment,

And I’d have to say (all of them were true)

a)      I want to be a writer so I write down everything
b)      I have a really good memory
c)       I’m totally in love with you so everything you do matters to me.

It may not be insignificant that the first guy I gave my heart to had a memory as good as mine. “we did this and you said that and—“ and then he’d stop. But he’d already given himself away. I loved that.

About those boys: fiction is fiction. There are little pieces of the boys I love in every love story I write, of course. Because we love who we love, and how they act and are, and that can’t help but find its way onto the page. But all my characters are themselves, not any person from my own life.

3)What's your dream/ideal date?

To me, what I love the most about dating are three things a) you learn something about them b) they GET something about you c) it’s completely unexpected.  So, to me, it doesn’t matter what you do as long as those happen. On our first date, my husband hailed a horse and carriage and we rode through Central Park. It was so romantic and extravagant, so over the top. We’d both lived and worked in Manhattan for a while. But we worked there, we never did the fun, touristy things.  That was spontaneous, and he already knew I would love that C) That he thought to do that for me…I still swoon.

[Feb Feels] Waiting on Wednesday (55) + Top Picks

Welcome to Feb Feels: 7 days of Valentines day 4! Today I'm going to share my top 3 favorite YA contemporary romance novels and the top 3 I'm waiting on Waiting on Wednesday!

My top 3 favorite YA contemporary romance. (Books are randomly ordered.)

Anna and the French Kiss
(Anna and the French Kiss #1)
by Stephanie Perkins

Published December 2nd 2010 by Dutton

Blurb (Goodreads):
Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris--until she meets Étienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, beautiful, Étienne has it all...including a serious girlfriend.

But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true. Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?

I love the how the relationship of Anna and Étienne St. Clair started, progressed, and turned out. This book is very cute, witty, and utterly sweet and romantic. It's funny when you read the title, you think of scandalous hot scenes--but no. What you think of the book because of the title is not as what you seem it to be. I don't do re-readings but if I will, this will be the first book I will re-read.

P.S I miss Étienne! I think I'm gonna re-read a book soon. ;)

Slammed
(Slammed #1)
by Colleen Hoover

Published January 5th 2012 by Colleen Hoover

Blurb (Goodreads):
Following the unexpected death of her father, 18-year-old Layken is forced to be the rock for both her mother and younger brother. Outwardly, she appears resilient and tenacious, but inwardly, she's losing hope.

Enter Will Cooper: The attractive, 21-year-old new neighbor with an intriguing passion for slam poetry and a unique sense of humor. Within days of their introduction, Will and Layken form an intense emotional connection, leaving Layken with a renewed sense of hope.

Not long after an intense, heart-stopping first date, they are slammed to the core when a shocking revelation forces their new relationship to a sudden halt. Daily interactions become impossibly painful as they struggle to find a balance between the feelings that pull them together, and the secret that keeps them apart.

This book...well it surprised me. I thought it was like a Fifty Shades of Grey and Beautiful Disaster kind of book, but I was wrong. It's more reserved and conservative and just so romantic and heart-breaking and achingly beautiful. I'm in love with this book.

A Walk to Remember
by Nicholas Sparks

Published October 1st 1999 by Warner Books

Blurb (Goodreads):
Every April, when the wind blows from the sea and mingles with the scent of lilacs, Landon Carter remembers his last year at Beaufort High. It was 1958, and Landon had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love. Certainly the last person in town he thought he'd fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town's Baptist minister. A quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks, Jamie seemed content living in a world apart from the other teens. She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out. Landon would never have dreamed of it. Then a twist of fate made Jamie his partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter's life would never be the same. Being with Jamie would show him the depths of the human heart and lead him to a decision so stunning it would send him irrevocably on the road to manhood...

The first time I came across to A Walk to Remember was when I was a little girl. It was a movie, and I fell in love with it. I watched it more than I've watched the same movie in my life. More than five years ago, when I started to become a bookworm, I just realized that this was originally a book and was written by Nicholas Sparks. I read the book and as expected, it was a bit different from the movie--but I was still touched and I cried just like when I watched it.

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, originally started by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that highlights upcoming book releases everyone is waiting on.

My top 3 anticipated YA/NA contemporary romance on 2014! (Books are randomly ordered.)

Isla and the Happily Ever After
(Anna and the French Kiss #3)
by Stephanie Perkins

Expected publication: August 14th 2014 by Dutton

From the glittering streets of Manhattan to the moonlit rooftops of Paris, falling in love is easy for hopeless dreamer Isla and introspective artist Josh. But as they begin their senior year in France, Isla and Josh are quickly forced to confront the heartbreaking reality that happily-ever-afters aren’t always forever.

Their romantic journey is skillfully intertwined with those of beloved couples Anna and Étienne and Lola and Cricket, whose paths are destined to collide in a sweeping finale certain to please fans old and new.

Since I obviously loved Anna and the French Kiss, I'd read anything Stephanie Perkins write--companion with Anna or not.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before
(To All the Boys I've Loved Before #1)

by Jenny Han

Expected publication: April 22nd 2014 by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Blurb (Goodreads):
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the story of Lara Jean, who has never openly admitted her crushes, but instead wrote each boy a letter about how she felt, sealed it, and hid it in a box under her bed. But one day Lara Jean discovers that somehow her secret box of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her sister's ex-boyfriend, Josh. As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara Jean discovers that something good may come out of these letters after all.

I wanted to read this book the first time I read the blurb. The phrase "who has never openly admitted her crushes, but instead wrote each boy a letter about how she felt" was so me (except on the letter thing. I usually write poems or what I call soon-to-be-songs about them and my feelings) and I'd do anything just to read this!

Wish You Were Italian
by Kristin Rae

Expected publication: May 6th 2014 by Bloomsbury

Blurb (Goodreads):
Pippa is in Italy for the summer and, despite her parents’ wishes, she has no intention of just studying the local art! She has a list of things of her own to do: from swimming in the Mediterranean Sea to getting a makeover – and falling for an Italian boy! As Pippa explores the dramatic ruins of Rome and Pompeii, she is swept into her own drama with two guys: an irresistible local she knows is nothing but trouble and a cute American archaeology student . . . Will she find her true love?

The perfect reckless romance to enjoy whether you are home or abroad.

Well I'm sold whenever you have Italy and Italians on your book. The title and with that blurb sounds too obvious, though..
